FT estimates tech companies offered up to $300 billion in AI infrastructure guarantees
A Financial Times analysis estimates that technology companies offered up to $300 billion in residual value guarantees for AI chips and data centres over the past year.
- The structures support debt issued by special-purpose vehicles, with tech companies covering specified shortfalls if assets are sold or re-let below agreed values. Little of the maximum exposure is booked as a liability.
- The FT cites a $28 billion Meta guarantee for Hyperion, $29 billion of Broadcom exposure tied to Anthropic and $105 billion in Nvidia guarantees for an Ohio campus serving OpenAI.
- The financing can lower borrowing costs but leaves contingent exposure if demand weakens or assets lose value. S&P says it may count guarantees in leverage calculations.
